The Rising Tide Project

HSWRI joined the Rising Tide project in 2016, an undertaking that aims to protect coral reefs using sustainable aquaculture to develop ornamental fish for public display and aquariums. We’re working to breed flame angelfish (Centropyge loricula) and bicolor angelfish (Centropyge bicolor), which were graciously donated by Quality Marine of Los Angeles and quarantined at SeaWorld before being stocked into tanks at HSWRI. So far the fish are thriving on a mixed diet as we anxiously await successful pairing and mating. Our researcher Federico Rotman has experience raising flame angels in Hawaii so the learning curve will not be too steep as we tackle angelfish alongside our white seabass, yellowtail and halibut!
