Green Sea Turtles

Our Wildlife Populations program focuses on understanding the relationships between marine animals and their environment in order to address threats to ecosystem health. In 2009, green sea turtle eggs hatched at SeaWorld San Diego. The turtles were returned to the ocean in 2016, with help from HSWRI’s Senior Research Scientist Dr. Brent Stewart.

Dr. Stewart attached satellite transmitters to the turtles released by SeaWorld. The transmitters will allow us to document population movements of the endangered species and inform habitat management strategies. Dr. Stewart’s turtle tracking work is key to predicting and preventing negative impacts on green turtles from human disturbance, habitat loss and pollution, and climate change.
